Introduction to Fashion Designing

This module gives students an overview of the fashion industry and helps them understand the scope of fashion design as a career:

  • What is Fashion Designing? – Difference between a tailor and designer
  • Types of fashion (ethnic, western, fusion, casual, formal, etc.)

  • Overview of career options – designer, stylist, merchandiser, boutique owner

  • Fashion inspiration sources: culture, seasons, trends, celebrities

Elements & Principles of Design

Understanding design is key to creating visually balanced and appealing outfits. Students will learn:

  • Design Elements – Line, Shape, Texture, Color, and Form

  • Principles of Design – Balance, Proportion, Harmony, Emphasis, Rhythm

  • How to apply these principles in garment design and pattern layout

Fabric Study & Textile Basics

Designing requires knowledge of fabrics and how they behave:

  • Types of fabrics – Cotton, Silk, Georgette, Denim, Crepe, Rayon, etc.

  • Fabric texture, drape, and fall – what works best for which garment

  • Fabric widths, shrinkage, and cutting considerations

  • How to identify natural vs synthetic fabrics

Measurements, Pattern Making & Drafting

This is the technical part of fashion designing that builds construction skills:

  • How to take accurate body measurements

  • Drafting basic blocks for bodice, sleeve, skirt, and pants

  • Paper pattern making with seam allowance and notches

  • Pattern layout on fabric before cutting

  • Use of tailoring tools (scale, curve ruler, chalk, measuring tape)

Basic Garment Construction

Students apply their drafting skills to stitch beginner-friendly garments:

  • Stitching a Plain Kurti with basic neckline

  • Simple Skirt (A-line or gathered)

  • Basic Salwar or Pajama

  • Simple Blouse (with darts and shoulder shaping)

  • Understanding sewing machine parts, threading, and maintenance

  • Simple alterations and fitting correction

Finishing & Fashion Presentation

Garments are completed with clean, professional techniques:

  • Seam finishing, hemming, piping, and bias binding

  • Buttonhole and hook placements

  • Garment pressing and packaging

  • Displaying work creatively through a mini fashion portfolio with sketches, swatches, and garment photos
